Winter Tree Farm Check

My wife and I are having a little bit of fun at the property. We took the drone out to take some pics.

We took a drive out to the tree farm to have a look at the seedlings. We discovered about 400 trees per acre of our planted Red Cedars have survived the summer and the deer. We originally planted 680 trees per acre. Most trees looked great in the snow, but we noticed numerous brown and dead seedlings.

We scheduled with the tree planters to plant 4,500 Douglas fir seedlings in February of 2022. We will interplant these Douglas fir seedlings into the small areas where last year’s trees died. Interplanting will ensure there will be a consistent and even forest into the future.

The biggest impact to the land and a future forest can be made today. Any money spent on planting and spraying will have a huge impact on the value of the trees and the number of trees that survive. The main problem and issue I see with private timber land is the people’s decision to save a little money on planting and spraying. In most cases, these same landowners run into problems into the future with invasive weeds and low tree survival.

So plant a lot of trees, which is more than 400 trees per acre, and check on them every year for the first five years.
